Hockey is offered for either boys or girls as a winter sport.
General sport enquiries: Mr Hans van Vreden Head of Sport (hvanvreden@midstreamcollege.co.za).
Midstream College’s hockey has grown in leaps and bounds since our inception in 2007. After only this short time, we are a reckoned competitor in Gauteng and beyond the borders of the province. In the coming season we will field seven sides over three leagues, with a strong possibility of an eighth side also. Our A-teams placed 5th, our B-teams 6th and even our under 16C-team did well in their league in the season before Covid-19.
Over the years we have demonstrated our excellent progress on levels of play and coaching, as we have moved up through the leagues. We embrace the ever-changing game of hockey, the ever-improving methods of coaching and advancing relevant skill sets. We relish the opportunity to introduce this wonderful game to all.
We are blessed in having a wonderful synthetic surface, with floodlights, to compliment the manicured grass fields, which affords us the capacity to host many matches at home.
Our hockey season starts officially with the trials just before the April holidays, when we take our annual tours. Practically, however, we like to start with pre-season fitness training, particularly for our players who are neither athletes nor swimmers.
The hockey season kicks off with the Gauteng Cup, played at the start of the season. The season is punctuated by several derby matches, in amongst our many league fixtures, where we are continually searching to find competition that will extend and challenge the status quo. Many of these derby matches are against schools, which are outside of the province. The matches, which are the highlights for our players, however, are those against rival neighbours in Pretoria, of course.
The top tier schools against which we compete are listed below in no particular order and taking the u/14, u/16 and 1st teams into consideration: Pretoria Boys High School, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Hoërskool Menlopark, St Albans College, Hoërskool Garsfontein, Cornwall Hill College, Hoërskool Eldoraigne and Hoërskool Zwartkop. Over the past number of years, we have consistently managed to have more than a couple of players selected to represent the province each season.

Continuous effort — not strength or intelligence — is the key to unlocking our potential.

Girls Hockey
Midstream College takes hockey seriously and a professional approach is followed. The season starts each year with pre-season preparations in January and February. There are also conditioning sessions, which includes skills training for aspiring hockey players.
Background
Midstream College girl’s hockey has grown over the past 13 years, becoming bigger and stronger after every season. We look to the future with great anticipation. The astro turf and our increasing number of teams are great testimony to our dedication to providing a spot for every aspiring player. We participate in the Northern Blues macro schools league. Every girl who wants to play hockey is afforded the opportunity to be part of a team and each team has a dedicated coach.
All the teams attend hockey courses that are offered during the March/April holidays, and during the off-season, clinics are offered. Emphasis is placed on basic skills and conditioning.
Hockey 2019
The 2019 hockey season can be summarised by the words of Michael Jordan: “Talent will win matches, but teamwork will win championships.”
We play in the top league and held own, finishing in fifth position. Mention must be made of our u/14 A, u/15A and u/16A teams that participated in the Noordvaal competition during the July holidays. History was once again made by the u/15A team that progressed to play in the Noordvaal final tournament.
“Every great achievement begins with the intention to try.” – Vincent van Gogh
Individually, our players performed very well and we are proud of the following provincial players: Daina Graham, Charlie Sambo, Nomalanga Langa, Megan Heher, Drew Goatley, Zoë Sheriffs, Kayleigh Gourrah, Andrea Roberts, Ashley Williams, Noluthando Khomo and Veronica du Plessis. Two of our u/14 girls were chosen for the Gauteng development team, i.e. Miané Lessing and Marli Liebenberg.
Andrea Roberts was our first SA selected schools player.
Hockey 2020
Unfortunately the season was cut short due to Covid-19.
